BROKEN CONSORT

                                                  Program Note

Written for two harps,
Crossfade is based on a series of wave-like gestures that grow from nothing, come into prominence, and then slowly fade. While the material in both harps is based on similar dynamic arcs, they are, for most of the piece, out of phase with each other. As one harp is subsiding, the other is just beginning to grow, creating both a rhythm of dominance, and periods of ambiguity in between. Even as the material changes from one phrase to the next, from murmuring repeated notes to jagged rhythms, to staccato chords, the simple, incessant waves underlie the musical fabric
The piece is written for and commissioned by Marie-Pierre Langlamet..
